FOOD SECURITY & CLIMATE CHANGE (FOSECC)
Bethel Network’s Food Security & Climate Change (FOSECC) pillar focuses on strengthening community resilience through sustainable agriculture, climate-smart practices, and environmental conservation by working with communities to improve food systems, restore ecosystems, and promote sustainable livelihoods in the face of climate change. Many communities continue to face rising food insecurity driven by climate variability and unpredictable weather patterns, degraded soils and declining agricultural productivity, and limited access to sustainable farming knowledge and resources, all of which threaten livelihoods, nutrition, and long-term community resilience.
Our Approach
We implement integrated, climate-smart solutions through two key focus areas that strengthen both food production and environmental sustainability.
- Sustainable Agriculture: We promote regenerative and climate-smart farming practices that restore soil health, support organic farming, improve water-use efficiency, and encourage climate-resilient crop production to help communities adapt to changing climate conditions and improve food security.
- Environmental Conservation & Agroforestry: We support ecosystem restoration and sustainable land use through the establishment of community tree nurseries, promotion of agroforestry systems that integrate trees with crops, and encouragement of planting indigenous and fruit trees to enhance biodiversity, restore degraded landscapes, and improve long-term environmental resilience.
FOSECC Impact & Programs
Our Food Security & Climate Change (FOSECC) pillar is driving meaningful change by strengthening food systems and building climate resilience through sustainable agriculture and environmental restoration. By working closely with communities, we equip households with practical skills, promote climate-smart farming, and support ecosystem recovery to ensure long-term food security, improved nutrition, and sustainable livelihoods in the face of climate change.
Our Impact
180 households supported with sustainable agriculture practices
45 acres under climate-smart agriculture
Improved food security and household nutrition
Increased resilience to climate change
Our Key Programs
Sustainable Agriculture Program: We train and support communities to adopt climate-smart farming practices that improve productivity and resilience, focusing on regenerative agriculture, soil health improvement, use of organic inputs and fertilizers, and efficient water use. This has directly supported 180 households and placed 45 acres under sustainable farming practices.
Community Tree Nursery Initiative: We establish and support community-managed tree nurseries that contribute to environmental restoration and improved livelihoods, focusing on fruit trees for nutrition and income, indigenous trees for ecosystem restoration, and agroforestry integration. This has led to improved climate resilience and enhanced food security and income opportunities.
Our Implementation Model
Community engagement and needs assessment
Training and capacity building
Establishment of demonstration sites
Ongoing technical support
Monitoring and evaluation
Scaling through community ownership
Sustainability at the Core
- The FOSECC pillar is grounded in empowering communities with the knowledge, tools, and systems needed to sustainably manage their land and natural resources. By promoting climate-smart practices and long-term capacity building, we ensure lasting food security, environmental restoration, and climate resilience.
